The Same Core Rule Applies
No pets of any kind are allowed on Eurostar services to or from London. This includes cats, rabbits, hamsters, birds, reptiles — everything except certified assistance animals. See our dogs guide for the full background and alternatives for crossing the Channel.
The rest of this guide covers the pet-friendly continental Eurostar routes between France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Cats on Continental Eurostar Routes
Cats are welcome on continental services (the former Thalys routes) under the same rules as small dogs:
- Your cat must travel in a secure carrier no larger than 45×30×25cm.
- The carrier must fit on your lap or at your feet.
- Cats under 6kg travel free of charge.
- The carrier must remain closed throughout the journey.
Most domestic cats fit comfortably within the size and weight limits. Use a well-ventilated, airline-style carrier and line it with a familiar blanket to reduce stress.
Other Small Animals
Eurostar's continental policy covers “small domestic animals,” primarily cats and small dogs. The policy is less explicit about other species:
- Rabbits, guinea pigs, and similar small mammals — likely permitted if they fit in a carrier within the size limits, but contact Eurostar in advance to confirm.
- Birds (parrots, canaries, etc.) — specifically not allowed on Eurostar services.
- Reptiles and exotic animals — not permitted.
- Dangerous dog breeds — not permitted (definitions vary by country; check local laws).
Practical Tips for Travelling with a Cat or Small Pet
- Carrier training — get your pet used to the carrier well before the journey. Leave it open at home with treats inside.
- Feeding — feed a light meal 3–4 hours before travel, not immediately before, to reduce motion sickness risk.
- Water — bring a small dish and offer water during the journey, especially on longer routes.
- Vet check — if your pet is anxious, speak to your vet about calming options well before travel. Pheromone sprays for carriers can help.
- Check with neighbours — Eurostar asks you check passengers seated nearby are comfortable with your pet. The train manager will help find an alternative seat if needed.
Documentation for International Pet Travel
For crossing international borders within the EU with any pet:
- EU Pet Passport (if issued in an EU country) or Animal Health Certificate.
- Microchip — ISO standard, readable by standard scanners.
- Rabies vaccination — current and administered at least 21 days before travel.
